Welcome Dr. Michael Yesenofski

Dear Cloud Nine Patients,

We hope this letter finds you well, and that you are enjoying your summer so far!  We have some exciting new changes at our office and wanted to keep you all aware of the happenings.

Dr. Ballard has accepted a position in New Zealand to teach dentistry.  This is a tremendous opportunity for him to use his skills to make a major impact on the dentistry provided in New Zealand.  We are sad to see him go, but we are so excited about this new adventure for him and his family. Fortunately, Dr. Ballard has found an amazing Dentist to continue the Cloud Nine Dental legacy.

As with life, these changes had to happen very quickly and without a lot of notice.  We apologize for that!  But please know that Cloud Nine Dental will be the same practice with the same friendly faces. Dr. Ballard went through sixteen doctors before picking the perfect one for our team!

He said, “I can’t thank you all enough for the trust and friendship you have shown me.  I leave with a heavy heart, but I also feel happy because I have total confidence in Dr. Mike. It makes me feel good to know that all of you will continue to receive the best care.”

We are so excited to introduce

Dr. Mike Yesenofski D.D.S.

Dr. Mike grew up here on Portland’s West side. He attended Jesuit High School and the University of Portland for his dental education. He attended The Creighton University School of Dentistry, and received his D.D.S. degree in 2003. He has a passion for cosmetic and implant dentistry, as well as Invisalign treatment. Dr. Mike loves caring for, and getting to know his patients.

Dr. Mike has been married to his lovely wife, Megan, for 4 years. Together they have a 2 year old son named Avery Joseph, and a sweet Australian Shepherd named Grace. For fun they enjoy traveling, hiking, snowshoeing, and spending time with family. Dr. Mike also enjoys playing and writing music, and can occasionally be seen playing with friends around town.

We can’t wait for you to meet him!

Warmest regards,

The Cloud Nine Team 🙂

Marijuana’s Harmful Effects on the Mouth

GREAT article from Live Strong on the effects of marijuana on your mouth!  Read below or click on the link.

About 8.1 million people in the United States use marijuana, also called cannabis, on a daily or almost daily basis, reports the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Like tobacco, marijuana smoke contains high concentrations of many chemicals, and some of them are known cancer-causing substances. These chemicals put marijuana smokers at risk for many of the same mouth problems caused by tobacco smoking — gum disease, dry mouth, tooth decay and oral cancer.

Dry Mouth and Tooth Decay

Using marijuana — whether smoked or ingested — reduces the amount of saliva produced in the mouth due to its effects on the nervous system. With frequent use, this effect can result in an uncomfortable condition called dry mouth, or xerostomia. Without sufficient saliva to wash away food and bacteria from the teeth and gums, xerostomia can cause bad breath and mouth sores. Additionally, a dry mouth promotes tooth decay and possible tooth loss if the decay is not treated promptly.

Gum Disease

Like tobacco smokers, marijuana smokers may be at risk for developing gum disease — also known as periodontal disease. Gum disease occurs when oral bacteria are allowed to flourish in the mouth, causing inflammation of the gum tissue and bone that surrounds the teeth. Without treatment, gum disease can lead to tooth loss. Having a dry mouth due to smoking marijuana also contributes to the development of periodontal disease.

Oral Cancer

Both tobacco and marijuana smoke contain cancer-causing chemicals, including aromatic hydrocarbons, benzopyrene and nitrosamines. Marijuana users, who frequently smoke marijuana over long periods of time, have an increased risk of developing oral cancer, according to a study published in the January 2014 issue of “Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.” The high temperatures of marijuana smoke when cannabis is smoked directly might irritate the oral tissues and trigger cellular changes — potentially leading to the development of precancerous lesions in the mouth. Combined use of tobacco and marijuana may further increase the risk of oral cancer because tobacco use is a strong risk factor for this disease.

Avoiding and Treating Problems

Good oral hygiene, such as brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily, along with regular dental visits may help minimize oral complications associated with smoking marijuana. During routine checkups, dentists screen for oral cancer, check for tooth decay and gum disease, and can make suggestions on how to contend with dry mouth. Seeing a dentist promptly at the first sign of a problem can keep small problems from becoming serious complications.

Can you brush your teeth TOO hard?

The answer is absolutely!

Brushing your teeth too hard (known as “toothbrush abrasion”) or using a toothbrush with hard bristles can not only hurt your gums, causing them to recede, but can actually remove the protective enamel coating your teeth.

Over brushing can wear down the enamel on your teeth and push back the gums which exposes sensitive root areas.  When you remove that protective layer, it results in sensitive teeth and gums.

Choosing a toothbrush with soft or extra soft bristles is a much better choice.  Plaque is actually soft enough that you could remove it when a soft cloth, only if you could reach all of the areas.  The key is to be thorough, not aggressive.

So brush soft and don’t forget to floss!
